Hello McDonough, I am excited to be studying abroad this semester in the Czech Republic. I will be spending about 4 months studying at the Anglo-American University in Prague.
Why Study Abroad?
I came into Marietta College knowing I wanted to study abroad because I saw my older brother's experiences from his semester in Austrailia. I got to see how much fun my brother had during his time abroad and knew I wanted to go to.
Why Prague?
While the Czech Republic doesn't have quite the same climate or beaches as Austrailia, it does have a lot to offer for studying abroad. In 1989 the communist part in Czechoslovakia collapsed and was replaced by a free market economy. In 1990, Czechoslovakia held its first democratic election and in 1993 it peacefully divided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The combination of Czech history going back over 1,000 years and recent political changes give the Czech Republic a fascinating and unique culture that I can't wait to explore.
Additionally, the Czech economy is growing and Prague is at the center of it. The Czech Republic has one of the highest GDP growth rates and entrepreneurship rates in all of Europe. Prague is also really nice because many people in the city speak English.
Finally, the Czech Republic is located in the heart of Europe which will allow me to explore other countries during my semester abroad.
My Classes
While at Anglo-American University I'm planning on taking 5 classes First, I'm taking Elementary Czech Language & Culture to learn a little Czech since I don't have any experience with the language
I'm also taking Prague Art and Architecture and History of Art to satisfy some of my fine arts general education credits for Marietta. Then, I'm taking Introduction to Marketing which will transfer back to satisfy my major courses. Finally, I'm still on the waiting list for one more course and I'm hoping to get another business course in my schedule.
